How to Build a Sandbox
A sandbox is a great addition to any family’s backyard. Kids love to play for hours in the sandbox as they let their imaginations run wild. You could purchase a sandbox that will probably last for a short time, but if you’re interested in building one that will last for years to come, then continue reading today’s post. We will provide you with the tips and tricks you need to make a solid sandbox that should provide hours of enjoyment for many years.

Choose a Location
Before you start building a sandbox, take stock of your backyard. What areas receive a lot of shade? What areas are at the bottom of a hill or in a low-lying part of the yard? Are there spots where you won’t be able to see your children playing? Once you’ve determined the best place to put the sandbox, make sure to check that the ground is mostly level. This will help with placing the beams that will form the framework of the sandbox.
Determine the Size and Shape
Traditionally, sandboxes are small and square in shape, but that doesn’t mean you need to build yours to fit that style. Depending on the number of kids you have or that you anticipate playing in the sandbox, you might want to build one that is quite large. Additionally, you could build a sandbox that is not a box at all! Hexagons offer additional space without covering a lot more space than a large square.
Measure and mark the area where you plan to build the sandbox so that you can be sure to grab the right pieces of lumber at the home improvement store. With that being said, double check that you have the side-mounting lumber hauler from SidekicK VSC in your car so that it’s ready to go when you are.
Assemble Your Tools
While you want to make sure that you have the right tools for cutting, sanding, and shaping the lumber, you’ll also want to make sure that you have a sturdy shovel ready to go if you plan on placing the sandbox slightly into the ground. Building your sandbox on top of the ground shouldn’t be an issue if you prefer not to dig into your yard. After checking that you have your tape measure, pencil, drill, and other tools, double check that you also have a pair of safety glasses. It might be tempting to think you don’t really need them, but you never know when a splinter or other object can put you at risk for an eye injury.
Build and Assemble the Sandbox
Follow the directions that you’ve chosen for your sandbox and make sure to perform the cutting, measuring, and assembly at the location where you want to place the sandbox. You may be cutting the wood in your garage since you need to be close to an electrical outlet, but resist the temptation to start connecting the pieces of wood until you are at the build site. Once you’ve completed the frame of the sandbox, it’s time to add the sand!
Don’t forget to make a cover for the sandbox as cats would love to a sandbox for their bathroom. While you may keep your cats indoors, not everyone does, and you definitely don’t want your kids finding a surprise in their sandbox.
